My love of steam goes back to my childhood where I developed a love for the Engines. I recently became involved with Reefsteamers a section 21 Company based in Germiston. I now spend any free time I have at the depot working as a volunteer doing coach controlling on trips for the public or helping at the depot with projects which are running to restore and preserve our steam heritage.
The links below are to some photographs I have taken around the depot, on public runs to Magaliesburg or when I have been on a line siding run for photographic purposes. Please click on the image or the link to view the album.
Christiaan is only six years old and suffers from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. He has always dreamed of riding on a “Real Steam Train and meeting the Driver”. And on Saturday his dream came true. Reefsteamers treated him to a very special day out on the steam train run to Magaliesburg. On his arrival at Maraisburg Station he was introduced to the driver Shaun Ackerman and allowed to climb into the cab. Christiaan and his family, along with Angie and Liora from Reach for a Dream all went on the trip to Magliesburg on the train. At the Magliesburg Country Hotel, Christiaan was escorted to the Locomotive a 25nc no 3472 named Elize, where he was able to ride into the Magliesburg Station with the driver Shaun Ackerman. After a lunch stop he returned to the train to enjoy his ride home. When asked what he enjoyed most about being in the cab of the locomotive he replied “Blowing the Whistle”. Shaun made himself available on the homeward journey to meet the family and answer all of Christiaan’s questions about Reefsteamers and Steam Trains.
